This study x-rays the impact of social networking sites utilization on academic performance of undergraduate students in Yobe State University Damaturu. Exploratory survey research design was used. Simple random sampling technique was used to select three hundred and seventy (370) students for the study. A self-developed Questionnaire was used to collect the data, the instrument was pilot tested and reliability of 0.76 was found. The data collected was analyzed using Mean and standard deviation (SD) for the research questions While Mann-Whitney was used to test the null hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that social networking sites utilization has positive impact on academic performance of undergraduate students with cluster mean=2.634 and also the undergraduate students are competent in utilizing social networking site with cluster mean=2.580. Similarly, there is significant difference between male and female students (U (366) =691.5, P<0.05) of Yobe State University Damaturu in terms of social networking sites utilizations in favour of male students. The study recommends that the university should organized orientation programme and skill development to students that will encourage them to have the requisite skill, to be more competence and exposure to enable them to be more proficient in the utilization of SNSs in learning activities. The state government and university management should intensify their efforts and join hands together and ensure that computer laboratories are provided with adequate functional computers hardware and software for students’ to use. Seminars should be organized to students more especially female students’ on effective usage of Social Networking Sites.

Looking for Digital Media: Motivation, Learning and Message Design

This study aims to investigate design principles that keep university students on digital platforms through the learning process. The participants of the study are university students who use actively digital platforms in their learning process. The qualitative research is used in the design of the study. In this scope, 27 university students were interviewed to learn about their digital learning experiences. The results of the study showed that design elements that motivate university students use digital media in their learning process are categorized under five themes. These are visual design, audio-visual design, content design, interaction, and narrator characteristics. The results of the study can help to understand the university students’ learning behaviors on digital media. Furthermore, they can be used in the development and enrichment of educational content in digital media.

The Assessment of Information and Communication Technology in Enhancing Researchers’ Efficiency

The study aimed at investigating the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools in enhancing the researchers’ efficiency among English as a foreign language (EFL) faculty members. An explanatory mixed methods design was used to collect data from a sample of 43 EFL faculty members through a closed-end online survey and a WhatsApp group. The findings showed that 75% of the participants used ICT tools in the various stages of research. The qualitative data showed that 12 ICT tools including WhatsApp, Internet search engines, Google Forms, Office programs, citation websites and programs, Adobe reader, social networking sites, smart phone cameras, quantitative analysis programs, electronic mail, online word processors and similarity check programs. The findings of this study can be utilized in designing training programs on the employment of ICT in research work in order to empower researchers with more efficiency in using ICT tools for research purposes.

Status of Learning Facilities for Physics Curriculum Implementation in Primary Schools of Harari Region, Ethiopia

The aim of this study is to examine the status of learning facilities for primary school physics curriculum implementation. A survey design and a mixed approach were used to deliberate the study. Stratified and purposive sampling techniques were employed to select respondents (317 students, 12 cluster supervisors, 34 physics teachers and 34 principals). Quantitative and Qualitative data were obtained through questionnaires, interview guide, and observation checklist and document analysis. Descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test were used as a means for data analysis. The findings revealed that the status of learning facilities for physics curriculum implementation was inadequate in the region. There exists no significant difference between urban and rural schools on the availability of learning facilities (availability of learning facilities for urban and rural schools are corresponding). It was concluded that due attention were given to both urban and rural schools. However, the inadequacy in availability of learning facilities results in ineffective implementation of physics curriculum in the region. Therefore, collaborative efforts need to put in place among government, NGOs and the community to improve status of learning facilities for physics curriculum implementation in all schools.

The Relationship among Academic Social Interaction, Academic Behavior and Academic Achievement of Woldia Secondary School Students: implication for Quality Education and Psychosocial Support

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of students’ academic social interaction, academic behavior and academic achievement: examine the relationship among academic social interaction, academic behavior and academic achievement: do students’ academic social interaction and academic behavior predict students’ academic achievement of grade nine and ten students in Woldia Secondary School. The design used in this study was correlational design. The total number of the target population grade nine students in the study area was 1040. Of the total population, 200 grade nine students were selected as the sample of the study using simple random sampling technique. The instruments used in the study were scale questionnaires that measure students’ social interaction and academic behavior and documents to access student’s academic achievement average score in different school subjects of the first semester of 2011 E.C. One sample t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis were employed as data analysis. The results of one sample t-test demonstrated that the mean value of students’ academic social interaction was significantly higher than the mean test value. The mean value of academic behavior was significantly higher than the mean test value. The mean value of students’ academic achievement was significantly higher than the mean test value. The results of the Pearson correlation coefficient demonstrated that there was a statistically positive significant correlation between students’ academic social interaction and academic achievement. The results of regression analysis revealed that there was statistically significant contribution of academic social interaction and academic behavior to academic achievement. The contribution of academic social interaction found to be positive predictor of academic achievement.

The use of Teaching and Learning Resources (TLRs) in Senior High School Accounting Lessons: Perceptions of Teachers and Students in Wa Municipality

The use of Teaching Learning Resources (TLRs) in instructional processes plays a very important role in education globally. TLRs cannot be underestimated in the teaching of all subjects including Accounting. Over the last few decades there has been considerable changes in the business curriculum and professional practices, the nature and role of the accounting education has been expanded, hence the need for practical teaching of the subject. This necessitates the use of TLRs to stimulate learners interest in the subject. Accounting teachers however seems to have fallen short of the new practical approach to the teaching of the subject in Ghanaian Senior High Schools. The study examined the use of TLRs in Senior High School Accounting lessons from the perspective of teachers and students in the Wa municipality of the Upper West Region. Census technique was used to obtain data from 395 respondents which consisted of 370 third year Accounting students and 25 accounting teachers in five selected schools in the municipality. Questionnaires and observation guide were the tools used to gather data. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation) and thematic content analyses were the methods employed to present the results. It was found that a few TLRs were available in the schools involved but Accounting teachers hardly used them in lessons to deepen students’ understanding of the subject matter because they are expensive to acquire. It is, therefore, recommended that key stakeholders in education which includes the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, school management, teachers and non-governmental organisations should partner with the Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ghana, specifically, those in Wa Municipality to provide adequate TLRs for Accounting lessons in order to build the capacities of teachers and facilitate students learning.
